MAC Heating and Cooling Inc

Residential Air Filtration Installation for Smoke, Dust and Allergy Season

Most homes ship with a filter that stops lint and little else, which is why the dust comes back a week after cleaning and smoke season gets into everything. MAC Heating and Cooling Inc installs whole home filtration built into the ductwork since 2017. We match the filtration to what your blower can actually handle, so you get cleaner air instead of a restricted system.

Benefits of Our Residential Air Filtration Installation

Finer filtration captures the particles that a standard panel filter passes straight through, which is what most homeowners actually notice within a few weeks.
Filtration matched to your blower, not to a sales target

We measure static pressure first and recommend the highest filtration your system can carry safely, because a starved blower delivers worse air than a lesser filter would.

Every room gets treated, not just the one with the purifier in it

Building filtration into the ductwork means the whole house is filtered whenever the system runs, which a portable unit sitting in the living room cannot do.

Fewer filter changes with a deeper cabinet

A four or five inch media filter holds far more surface area than a one inch panel, so it captures more while lasting months longer between replacements.

Legal, ozone free equipment only

California limits ozone emissions from air cleaning devices for good reason, and we install only certified equipment rather than the ozone generators still sold online.

Our Services

Filtration works best as part of a properly installed system, which is why we handle the full range of residential heating and cooling work.

Complete central heating and cooling systems installed from the load calculation forward. A new system is the ideal moment to build in a proper filter cabinet, since the plenum is already open.

Diagnosis and repair of heating and cooling faults. Restricted or neglected filters are behind a meaningful share of frozen coils and overheated furnaces we get called out to.
Design, installation and replacement of home duct systems including sealing and insulating. Sealing leaky returns matters for filtration, because air pulled in from an attic never passes the filter at all.
Whole home media filter cabinets, UV germicidal systems and CARB certified air cleaners integrated into your ductwork, sized to what your blower can move without strain.
Air source and ductless heat pumps that heat and cool from one system, installed with filtration appropriate to the equipment and the home.
Single zone and multi zone ductless systems for additions, garages, ADUs and converted attics, including washable filter maintenance on existing units.

What Is Residential Air Filtration Installation and What Does It Involve?

Residential air filtration installation is the process of building air cleaning capability directly into a home’s heating and cooling system, so that every cubic foot of air the blower moves passes through filtration on its way back to the rooms. It is different from a portable purifier, which treats one room at a time. A whole home installation usually starts with replacing the thin one inch filter slot at the air handler with a deeper media cabinet that holds a four or five inch pleated filter, since more surface area allows finer filtration without choking airflow.
Depending on the home it can also include a UV germicidal lamp at the coil, an electronic or polarized air cleaner, sealing of the return path so unfiltered attic and crawl space air stops bypassing the filter, and in some cases a dedicated ventilation strategy. MAC Heating and Cooling Inc has been installing home air filtration systems since 2017, and we measure static pressure before recommending anything. We install only CARB certified air cleaning devices, we do not sell ozone generators, and we give you an itemized written price up front. The full range of what we handle is listed on macheatingandcoolinginc.com.

Whole Home Media Filter Cabinet Installation

The core of most of our filtration work is replacing the shallow one inch filter slot at the air handler with a deep media cabinet. We cut and fit the cabinet into the return plenum, seal the connection properly, and position the access door where you can reach it without moving equipment or crawling. Cabinets come in four and five inch depths, and we size to the airflow your system needs rather than to whatever fits fastest.
Most installations are a single visit once the cabinet is on hand, and we leave you with a filter size you can actually buy locally rather than a proprietary one only the installer stocks. After fitting we recheck static pressure to confirm the system still moves the air it is supposed to. The cabinet, the first filter and the labour are itemized in writing before we start. A cabinet this size changes static pressure, so it is checked against the blower during any HVAC Repair visit.

Our Work Process

Our advanced air scrubbers and filtration systems remove airborne pollutants and allergens, delivering cleaner, healthier air for your home year round.

Assess the system

Tell us what you are dealing with, whether that is smoke, allergies, pets or dust. We inspect the existing filter setup and measure what your blower.

Recommend and quote

We propose the filtration your system can carry, explain what each option does and does not do, and give you a written itemized price.

Install and verify

We fit the cabinet or device, seal the return so air cannot bypass the filter, then recheck static pressure and airflow to confirm the system still breathes.

Enjoy Cleaner Air

In Duct UV Germicidal Lamp and Air Cleaner Installation

We install UV germicidal lamps at the evaporator coil and certified in duct air cleaning devices for homeowners who want treatment beyond particle capture. Placement matters far more than wattage, so we mount lamps where they genuinely cover the coil face and drain pan rather than wherever the hole is easiest to cut. Power is run to a dedicated switched supply so the lamp can be isolated safely for service.
We install only devices that appear on the state’s certified list, and we will show you the certification for the specific model before you approve it. We do not sell ozone generators at any price. Lamp replacement intervals are explained at handover, and we will schedule the changeout for you if you would rather not track it yourself.

Return Duct Sealing and Filter Bypass Correction

Filtration only works on air that goes through the filter, so a significant part of this service is closing off the paths that let air get around it. We seal return plenums, platform returns built into floor framing, gaps around the filter slot, and duct joints pulling attic or crawl space air into the system. In older homes this is very often where the dust is coming from in the first place.

We can carry this out as part of a filtration installation or as standalone work on a system that already has good filtration and still delivers dusty air. Where the return is undersized as well as leaky, we quote the duct work separately so you can see exactly what each piece costs. Both are priced in writing before anything gets opened up. Where the leakage is worse than a seal can fix, the job becomes Ductwork Installation.

Filter Replacement Service and Pre Season Filtration Checkups

Filters only help while they are clean, and the most common filtration failure we find is a good system running a filter nobody has changed in a year. We supply and fit replacement media on a schedule that suits your household, with the interval set by what your home actually loads rather than the number printed on the box. Pet households and homes on unpaved roads get shorter intervals.
Ahead of fire season we will run a filtration check on request, covering filter condition, cabinet seal, return integrity and a static pressure reading to confirm nothing has drifted. Booking that early is worth doing, because once smoke arrives the schedule fills within days. Call and we will put you on the list before the rush starts. Tell us the cabinet size through Contact Us and we will bring the right media with us.

FAQ's

Can a higher MERV filter damage my HVAC system?

It can, which is why the rating should be matched to the equipment rather than bought off the shelf. Denser media raises resistance, and a system already running high static pressure can lose capacity, freeze the coil or strain the blower motor. Older systems with PSC blower motors are the most vulnerable. A technician can measure the pressure drop and tell you what your system carries safely, and if MERV 13 is too much in a one inch slot, a deeper media cabinet usually solves it.
No, not in a standard filter slot. True HEPA captures 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 microns, but it creates far more resistance than a residential blower is built to overcome, and forcing it usually means reduced airflow and equipment strain. Whole home HEPA does exist, but it requires purpose built equipment and a bypass configuration rather than a filter swap. For most homes, MERV 13 centrally plus a portable HEPA unit in the bedroom is the better real world setup.
Check that the device appears on the state’s list of certified air cleaning devices and that its packaging carries the label stating it meets California ozone emission limits. Electronic in duct air cleaners have been covered by this rule since 2020, and selling uncertified devices here carries enforcement penalties. Ask any contractor to show you the certification for the specific model they are proposing. A company that cannot produce it is a company to walk away from.

How often should I change filters during smoke season?

Far more often than the box suggests. A one inch filter rated for 60 to 90 days can load up in a week or less during heavy smoke, and a loaded filter restricts airflow instead of cleaning it. Check it weekly while smoke is present, and replace it when the media looks gray and matted or when you can no longer see light through the pleats. Deeper media cabinets last longer but still need checking more often than usual.
You need both, because they address different things. A media filter physically captures particles such as dust, dander, pollen and smoke as air passes through it. UV and air cleaning devices are aimed at microbial growth on the coil and at some airborne contaminants, and they do not remove particulate matter from the air stream. Any company telling you their device means you no longer need good filtration is overselling it.

Wondering Whether Your System Can Handle Better Filtration?

There is one way to know, and it takes a technician with a manometer rather than a guess off the filter box. We will measure what your blower is working against, tell you the best filtration it can carry safely, and put the price in writing. No obligation.

Areas We Are Serving

We install whole home air filtration throughout Sonoma County and the neighboring North Bay communities, including parts of Napa, Marin and Mendocino counties. Most filtration projects are a single visit once the equipment is on hand, and we can usually schedule an assessment within a few days. Booking ahead of fire season is worth doing, since demand rises sharply once smoke arrives.
