MAC Heating and Cooling Inc

Residential Ductless Mini Split Services for the Rooms Your System Never Reached

Some rooms are never going to work off the main system, whether that is a converted garage, a bedroom over the garage or an addition nobody thought to run duct to. A ductless mini split solves those spaces without opening walls. MAC Heating and Cooling Inc has installed and serviced them since 2017, and we size the zones properly rather than selling you the biggest system on the shelf.

Benefits of Our Ductless Mini Split Services

If you inherited a ductless unit with a previous home or a previous contractor, we will clean, service and repair it rather than insisting on a replacement.
Comfort in spaces ductwork was never going to reach

Garages, ADUs, attic conversions and additions get proper heating and cooling without tearing into finished walls or ceilings to run duct.

Independent control room by room

Each head has its own setpoint, so nobody has to argue over a single thermostat and you stop conditioning rooms that are empty all day.

Right sized zones rather than oversized heads

We calculate each room's load instead of guessing from floor area, which avoids the short cycling and clammy air that oversized ductless units are notorious for.

Installations that do not ruin the look of your house

Line sets get routed deliberately and covered where they run on exterior walls, because a tidy install matters on a system that lives on your wall.

Our Services

Ductless work sits alongside the full range of residential heating and cooling services we provide.

Complete central heating and cooling systems installed from the load calculation forward, for homes where ducted equipment remains the better answer.

Diagnosis and repair across central systems, heat pumps and ductless equipment, with the repair priced in writing before work begins.
Design, installation and replacement of home duct systems, for the cases where extending ductwork genuinely beats adding a ductless zone.
Whole home media filter cabinets and certified air cleaners for ducted systems, since the mesh filter in a ductless head is a comfort filter rather than a fine particle filter.
Ducted air source heat pumps that heat and cool the whole home from one system, with electrical capacity and running costs reviewed up front.
Single zone and multi zone installation, repair, deep cleaning and maintenance for ductless systems in additions, garages, ADUs, converted attics and problem rooms.

What Are Ductless Mini Split Services and What Do They Involve?

A ductless mini split is a heat pump that delivers heating and cooling directly into a room through a wall mounted or ceiling-mounted indoor head, with no ductwork between the equipment and the space. An outdoor compressor connects to each indoor head through a slim bundle of refrigerant lines, control wiring and a condensate drain, all passing through a hole roughly three inches across. Services on these systems fall into three groups. Installation covers load calculations, choosing between single-zone and multi-zone configurations, selecting head locations, routing the line set, mounting and commissioning. Repair covers the usual faults, including refrigerant leaks at flare connections and blocked condensate drains.
Two things separate a good ductless installation from a poor one, and neither is the brand on the box. The first is sizing, because these systems suffer badly from oversizing. The second is workmanship at the connections, since flare joints and condensate routing are where most ductless failures begin. We calculate loads room by room, configure the system around how you actually use the space, route the lines so the outside of your house still looks presentable, and service existing systems regardless of who installed them. You get an itemized written price before anything starts. The rest of what we handle is listed on macheatingandcoolinginc.com.

Single Zone and Multi Zone Configurations

A single zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor head. A multi zone system runs several heads from one outdoor unit, usually between two and five. Most homeowners assume multi zone is automatically the cheaper and better choice, and that is often wrong. The issue is partial load behavior. A large multi zone outdoor unit has a minimum output it cannot go below, and when only one small bedroom is calling for cooling, that minimum can far exceed what the room needs.
The compressor then short cycles, efficiency falls below the rating on the sticker, and the system removes almost no moisture from the air. Single zone inverter compressors modulate down much further because they only feed one head. Multi zone still makes good sense when several rooms genuinely run together, when outdoor wall space is limited, or when one outdoor unit is preferable visually. We size the outdoor unit against what could run simultaneously rather than by adding up every head, and we will tell you when two smaller systems beat one large one. For whole-house coverage rather than room by room, a Heat Pump Installation covers the same ground on one system.

Our Work Process

Our advanced air scrubbers and filtration systems remove airborne pollutants and allergens, delivering cleaner, healthier air for your home year round.

Assess the space

We look at the rooms you want treated, calculate their loads, and talk through how you use them, since a guest room and a home office need different answers.

Configure and quote

We recommend a single zone or multi zone setup, propose head locations and line routing, and give you an itemized written price.

Install and commission

We mount the equipment, make and test the connections, confirm proper condensate drainage, then run the system and show you the controls.

Head Placement, Line Set Routing and Condensate Drainage

The details that decide whether you are happy with a ductless system five years on are mostly decided in the first few hours of the installation. Head placement matters because these units throw air in a specific direction, and a head mounted where a bed or a doorway sits in the path creates a draft nobody wants. Height, clearance above the unit and access for filter cleaning all need thinking about before drilling. Line set routing matters because the bundle has to get from the head to the outdoor unit, and the difference between a considered route with a proper cover and a length of tubing stapled across the front of the house is permanent.
Condensate is the one homeowners never think about and the one that causes the most damage. Indoor heads produce water whenever they cool, and that water has to drain by gravity to somewhere sensible. A drain with insufficient fall, or one terminating against the wall, shows up later as staining, damp drywall and a callback. We plan all three before we cut anything. Send a photo of the wall you have in mind through Contact Us and we will tell you if the routing works.

Ductless Systems for Garages, ADUs and Converted Spaces

These spaces are the strongest case for going ductless, and they come with their own considerations. A converted garage usually has minimal insulation in the walls and none in the door, so its load is far higher per square foot than the rest of the house and sizing from floor area will get it badly wrong. An ADU needs a system that can heat and cool independently and often needs to satisfy its own permit requirements as a separate dwelling. An attic conversion deals with heat gain through the roof that the original house never had to handle.
In each case we calculate the actual load rather than applying a rule of thumb, and we are honest about the building envelope. If a garage door has no insulation at all, the right first step may be insulating it rather than buying a larger unit to fight the heat loss forever. We would rather point that out during the estimate than sell you capacity that exists to compensate for a fixable problem. Where the trunk can still be extended cleanly, Ductwork Installation is usually the cheaper route.

Mini Split Cleaning, Deep Cleaning and Ongoing Maintenance

Ductless systems need more hands on maintenance than most owners are told at the point of sale, and neglecting it is why so many develop a musty smell within a few years. The indoor head pulls all of its air through thin mesh filters, which clog far faster than a central filter, and those should be rinsed every two to four weeks in heavy use. Beyond the filters sits the part that actually causes the odor. The blower wheel and evaporator coil stay damp after cooling, collect organic debris, and grow mold that a filter rinse cannot touch.
Clearing that requires a proper deep clean with the casing removed and the wheel and coil flushed, which typically costs somewhere in the range of $150 to $400 per indoor head and is worth doing every year or two depending on use. A simple habit helps between visits: run fan or dry mode for a while after cooling so the coil dries instead of sitting wet. We deep clean, service and maintain ductless systems including ones we did not install.

FAQ's

Why does my mini split smell musty when it starts up?

That smell is almost always mold growing on the blower wheel and evaporator coil inside the indoor head, not on the filters. The coil stays damp after cooling and collects dust, which gives growth somewhere to take hold. Rinsing the filters will not fix it, because the growth sits deeper in the unit. It needs a deep clean with the casing off and the wheel and coil flushed properly. Running fan or dry mode after cooling helps keep it from returning.
Yes, and this is the part rarely mentioned during the sale. Filters need rinsing every two to four weeks rather than a filter change every few months, and each indoor head needs periodic professional deep cleaning that a ducted system does not require in the same way. With several heads in a house, that cost adds up. None of this makes ductless a bad choice, but it should be in your budget from the start rather than arriving as a surprise in year three.
Only in unusual layouts. A single head conditions the space it is mounted in, and while air will drift to adjoining areas when doors stay open, it will not hold steady temperatures in separate closed rooms. Homeowners who try to cover a house with one oversized head end up with one very cold room and several that never change. Whole home coverage needs either multiple zones or a ducted system, and we will tell you honestly which suits your floor plan.

Can I install a DIY mini split kit myself?

Some kits are sold for that purpose, but there are real complications worth knowing. New equipment ships with A2L refrigerants that are mildly flammable and require specific tools and handling procedures. Installations still require permits, and unpermitted work causes problems at resale. Manufacturer warranties are frequently tied to professional installation. If you have already bought a kit, we are happy to look at it, but check the warranty terms before you open the box.
It will run, but it will struggle and cost more than it should. An uninsulated garage, particularly one with a bare metal door, loses heat far faster than a finished room, so the load per square foot is much higher. The common mistake is buying a bigger unit to compensate, which raises both the purchase price and the running cost permanently. Insulating the door and walls first usually lets a smaller system do the job better, and we will say so during the assessment.
